Salida Firefighters in Action!
The Salida Fire Department responded to two emergencies Friday, May 10th: a swift water rescue on the Arkansas River, and a traffic accident on U.S. 50. They handled both simultaneously. In this picture, they are training future firefighters for swift water rescues amid the rushing spring run-off in downtown Salida.
Spring Rain and Snow is Melting off Fast in Salida!
Salida got several inches of wet, heavy spring snow and rain over the weekend, making for a pretty murky Arkansas River. But it’s clearing up gorgeously, and this could be our greenest spring in a while! The sun is back out and melting everything off nicely, so the trails should be ride-able by Wednesday. Ye Ole S-Town, not so very long ago. Well, before the S graced Tenderfoot Mountain. And before we paved the streets and ran the gunslingers and brothels out of town. But other than that, very little has changed.

Salida’s Historic Bar, The Vic, Gets a Facelift
No telling yet who’ll lease the space and finally throw open the doors, but we’re thrilled to see the old wooden bar and stained glass backdrop have been preserved and restored.
Monarch’s Ski Season just got EXTENDED!
Thanks to all the recent storms, Monarch’s new closing day is not until April 14th!!! Don’t miss the annual chili cook-off in the parking lot. It’s a great time to carouse around with the locals between runs and get yourself a delicious, free meal! And don’t forget to join or watch the rowdy race down Gun Barrel.
Back flip on Skis – Big Thanks to the Recent Storms at Monarch!
When there’s been this much recent snow, you’re guaranteed a soft landing, so it’s a good time to try that back flip!
Moose Playing around Beaver Creek near Fairplay, Colorado
Less than a mile north of the cute little town of Fairplay, Colorado, on the Beaver Creek trail. These four moose made a brief appearance before disappearing back into the forest above the creek. Ski it, snowshoe it, or just hike it (likely not fit for bikes for at least a couple more months). It’s an easy trek you can make as short as you like, or follow it around all day!
North Fork Creek WATERFALLS, Maysville, Colorado!
There’s just barely enough snow on the Angel of Shavano trail for skiing–some of us managed it, but those in snowshoes fared better. The waterfalls are worth it however you get there!
Full Moon Ski!!!
This weekend is a great time to grab a few of your besties, some firewood, and head out to Old Monarch Pass for a moonlit ski or snowshoe. If you’ve never seen the white hills ablaze with moonlight, now’s the time!
